What happened — the timeline
-
May 2, 2025De minimis duty-free treatment ends for goods from China and Hong Kong. Roughly 1.36 billion packages entered under de minimis in FY2024 — about 90% of all cargo entries, around 60% from China.
-

-
October 22, 2026CBP's postal interim final rule compliance deadline — the formal regulatory framework for handling formerly duty-free parcels.
-
July 1, 2027De minimis repealed by statute (One Big Beautiful Bill Act). The rule is gone from the law itself, not just suspended.
What DTC sellers should do now
1. Price with duty in it
Every sub-$800 shipment is now dutiable. Run your top products through the duty-stack calculator and rebuild landed cost into pricing or shipping charges.
2. Get your HTS codes right
Duty now applies to everything, so classification errors cost real money on every order. Get a broker to review your top-SKU codes.
3. Rethink fulfillment
Many sellers are moving inventory to US warehouses or 3PLs so duty is paid once at bulk import instead of per parcel — compare both models with real numbers.
4. Watch the alerts
Rates are still moving by executive action. Join the tariff-change alerts list so a rate change doesn't silently eat your margin.
